In the Dominican Republic, the official identification of citizens is mainly carried out through the Identity and Electoral Card (CIE), a document that assigns a unique number to each person and allows access to numerou public and private services.

Identity and Electoral Card (CIE)

The identity and electoral card is issued by the Central Electoral Board (JCE) and serves as the official identification document for Dominican citizens. It begins to be issued from the age of 12, and a person is considered to reach the legal age of majority at 18 years. This card contains personal information such as full name, date and place of birth, identification number, photograph, blood type (optional), marital status, occupation, and address, as well as security elements to prevent fraud.

Each ID card has a unique 11-digit number, which also serves as a driver's license number, tax identification number, and can be used by private companies to identify their clients. The number is divided into a series (3 digits), document number (7 digits), and a Luhn check digit. The ID card series originally represented the province of issuance, although in the new formats many are assigned centrally.

Unique Identity Number (NUI) The NUI is assigned by the State from birth and ensures a personal and permanent identification in all health, education, public services, and social welfare systems, later being integrated into the ID card.

Single Citizen Account
The Dominican Republic has implemented a digital system called the Single Citizen Account, which allows citizens to identify themselves on government portals and applications using their ID card number as an identifier and a secure password, integrating multi-factor authentication and biometric verification.
